Kraemer Yarn Co. has named Marn Austin their designer of the month for January.
Marna is a customer at The Merc.
She designed her sampler afghan and used Summit Hill yarn from Kraemer Yarns. She even has her name and the date in the pattern.
This would be an heirloom for some lucky new baby(grandchild) or your own personal use.
We are lucky enough to have the original project very proudly displayed at the shop and hope you all will come in to see her beautiful work.

Sallie has just returned from Meg Swansen's Knitting Camp. It is an experience that everyone should have at least once. Learned many new things, had a great bonding sessions with many new and old friends and have made arrangements for Meg and Amy Detjen to visit Knitters Mercantile! More details to follow. One of our campers was a guy named Franklin Habit who is a riot. He has a friend named "Delores". More importantly, his blog describes camp better than I ever could so visit "the-panopticon.blogspot.com" for good info and a good laugh.

Guess who came into the shop on Sunday to knit and show off her finished scarlett and gray bag? See how nice the bag turned out?

Lots of fun was had on Sunday! You know, you're always welcome to stop by and knit awhile. It is great fun to see the projects that people are working on completing. This past Sunday we had people starting to use color for the first time, binding off the Fiber Trends felted clogs so she could felt them Sunday night, and a Fair Isle baby sweater from Sweaters from Camp among other things. Finished felted bags, baby sweaters and socks were shared too.

Book of the week 7/17, is Jean Frost's "Jackets".
At the TNNA fashion show, jackets seemed to dominate the runway. This book gives you the opportunity to knit your own jacket and when your jacket is noticed-and it will be-you can proudly say, "Thank you, I knit it myself."

Saturday and Sunday, the internationally known knitting designer was in Columbus teaching classes for Knitter's Mercantile. Saturday, Vivian taught a class on Domino Knitting.
Sunday's class was on Shadow knitting.

Why, yes! Knitter's Mercantile does have a binder of her available designs that you can review. The new designs are coming out in September of 2006. If you see a kit you want, you should really put in an order for one. You can see some of the designs at Vivian's website found at Vivian Høxbro.

Our workshop with Chris Bylsma scheduled for 5/20 had to be cancelled due to illness. We have rescheduled her Crayon Box Jacket workshop for 6/24. There are a few seats left so if you are interested and missed out on the first workshop, call the store and reserve your seat.

That's right...Knitters Mercantile is hosting the internationally known author and designer Vivian Hoxbro. She will be here for a workshop on Domino Knitting and Shadow Knitting. Her workshop will be held June 17th and June 18th. On Sat. she will be doing Domino knitting and on Sun. it will be Shadow knitting. Today, we received a wonderful bundle of blocks for a Coverlet for the Women's Shelter. The blocks were made and donated fromthe Blendon Grange #74 as a community project. Their project year fruns from Sept to Aug each year. The yarn is from left over from other projects. This donation of 63 blocks brings their total donated to 100 blocks used to create the coverlets and afghans.

A big "Thank You" to these wonderful people!

Sallie and Jan went to TNNA in January and had a great time. There's some wonderful yarns coming out. This is one new yarn available to those who really like to knit with amazing yarn and have their feet feel really wonderful. Regia Silk Sock yarn is new from Regia. We have these solid colors available and one self-stripping yarn. More are on the way. We have these yarns available in the sock yarn section. If you cannot find it, ask! 2. Great Aran Afghan Knit-along will invade Men's Knitting. Each person attending gets support as everyone knits their own squares. We've got the book available if you want to see what the finished afghan looks like. They meet once a month for support and enthusiam.

Terry's Sweater by Vikki!

I received this email from Vikki, a regular Knit Witter who enjoys coming to the shop on Fridays. This week she brought in this sweater that she designed and knit for her husband.
"Here's the photo of my husband Terry in his new sweater.

After looking at a book of fair isle patterns, I designed my own
pattern.
The placement of the pattern was an idea I got from a Checkheaton (not
sure
of the spelling!) pattern. I knit it in the round steeking the sleeves
and
neckline. I used Silky Wool yarn."

Vikki steeked the sleeves...so that was a great learning experience. The sleeve was knit down from the steek.

We've made contact with a local artist (Fern Creek Stable and Textile Arts) who raises alpaca and spins their wool. We have a limited selection of this 100% alpaca, suri or alpaca/suri blends. These are natural colors, undyed and two ply. Soft and lucious. The hanks come in 2-4 ounce hanks.

These locallly produced yarns are "on the counter" while they last. Come fondle the yarns!

Happy New Year everyone. Sorry I didn't get the "book of the week" on the blog this week. It will be all fresh next week and speaking of next week, remember that we will be closed on Mon. 1/9/06 for inventory. Doesn't that sound like fun!
As many of you know we are looking for help. Help I mean in an employee. We are looking, ideally, for someone with retail experience and able to somewhat assist customers with knitting/crocheting. In particular we need help during the day not just on weekends and evenings.
If anyone out there can send us a candidate, or be a candidate, well we sure would appreciate!!

Knit for Her Cure

We have kits available from the Knit For Her Cure! These kits make a great gift for knitters and non-knitters alike. If you're the knitter, pick up a kit for your friend and knit it for them. If you're the non-knitter, pick one up for your favorite knitter!

With each kit you purchase, a donation is given to the Gynecological Cancer Foundation. Knitter's Mercantile will also donate an additional 10% of the sales to Susan B. Korman Breast Cancer Research.

That's right! Lots of knitters stopped by the shop looking for yarn for the perfect scarf, hat or gloves for those on our list. New yarn has arrived, so do stop by the shop and see what's around. Lots of yarn has been added to the 40% off shelves!

Here are some pictures of Mary's gift for one of her daughters. This poncho is knit using 6 skeins of Manos. Use about a size 10 needle CO 98 sts K2xP2 rib til ya run out. Save enough to sew the seam. Just knit, knit and purl, purl. Once you cast off, just join so you have a nice point. The poncho can be worn in several ways...point to front, point back, point to the side. Very nice indeed!

Please note the wonderful modeling. It's the perfect model look!

We received a very generous gift in the mail on Friday. 11 rectangles arrived for our afghans for the battered women's shelfter. Each rectangle was knit by a brand new knitter as part of the new Market Arts Center which is sponsored by the Pike Arts Guild.

These colorful rectangles are well knitted and show true skill to knitting!

The next time you're in the shop, notice the Christmas tree as you walk in. We're accepting donations of knitted hats and such that will be donated to the Franklin County Children's Services. The tree is starting to get full. In fact, Judy Mueller dropped of 150 hand knitted hats and 3 lap robes. You read that right...150 hats. They're very cute!

Feel free to stop by the shop and sit and knit! Yarns continue to arrive and we keep moving stuff around to make room. I bet you'll see something new each time you come for a visit.

This past week, we received a large shipment of books.
Luxury Knits by Amanda Griffiths presents some lovely designs using luscious yarns. Barbara and Sallie each have their favorite patterns already!.

Designer Knitting with Kitty Bartholomew by Kitty Bartholomew and Kathy Price-Robinson give photos of a real person wearing the sweater designs with slight variations. The layout of the book is enhanced with lots of photos.

Knitter's Lib by Lena Maikon takes us along 20 All-season knit and crochet designs.

Cold weather is coming closer and closer and more frequently. hats gloves scarves by Lousia Harding has arrived. Guess what the patterns are all about? Right! Hats, gloves and scarves. We do have Louisa's yarn line in the shop!

Crochet Bags! by Candi Jensen arrived. We all need to carry "stuff." This book gives 15 "Hip projects for carrying your stuff!"

Wrap Style by Pam Allen and Ann Budd of Interweave Knits is back in stock. A nice variety of stylish and knit-able warming garments fill the pages of this book.

handknit Holidays by Melanie Falick. This highly anticipated book arrived giving us well photographed designs appropriate for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Winter Solstice. Of particular interests to certain members of the staff are the "Over-the-knee-socks" by Cindy Taylor found on page 83. Very eye catching!

Vickie Howell from DIY's Knitty Gritty authored New Knits on the Block: a guide to knitting what kids really want. Crowns, pirate bath set, viking dress-up, guitar pillows and super kid capes might be the perfect gift for your young friend.

Einstein Coat Class

Sallie has been teaching a class on knitting the Einstein Coat from the wonderful The Knit Stitch by Sally Melville. Kara finished her's and shared the finished product on Friday at the shop. Notice how happy Kara is about completing the coat. She did a great job! Would you believe, it's a gift? Wow! I'll take a gift like that any day!

The lovely Jill spent sometime modeling the garment for us. I had to snap a picture! About four staff were giving their opinions on which buttons should go on the coat.

More copies of The Knit Stitch by Sally Melville have been ordered. Have you seen this amazing book?

Knitters of various experience from just learning to 25+ years experience have used the book for the inspiring designs and renewed enthusiasm for the "knit stitch."

Perhaps other members of the class will model their completed projects so I can post them for you to see. I'm almost finished with mine...almost half a sleeve left. I'll sure someone will take a picture for me and I'll post it for you to see.

Good morning...
We have just received the new scarf kits from Muench Yarns called "A Knit For Her Cure". It is a complete package with yarn, pattern, picture and bag. The saying on the side of the bag reads "A gift from the heart to lift the spirit of a woman dealing with cancer". For each kit that is sold a donation is made to the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation. The kits are designed by the likes of Melissa Leapman, Sally Melville and many others. Come see...and enjoy!

This week, 10/31, the book of the week is "Clever Knits' by Kristine Clever. She describes it as "great looks for kids". She states further that "My designs are not fussy and you can easily substitute different yarns. Each pattern has a useful tip included to provide a lesson. I hope my positive approach to knitting will encourage you to experiment with a variety of yarns and patterns. Knitting is fun!" Amen to that...

Knitting for the Shelter

Did you need a reminder of how wonderful knitters are?

Let me share with you the good work Columbus knitters have accomplished.

Several months ago, we put out a box donated yarn to have people knit 7" X 9" rectangles for afghans.

To date, 13 afghans have been created and are being donated to the Battered Womens's Shelter!

More yarn has been brought to the shop for rectangles to be knitted. Do you have washable yarn to donate? Bring it into the shop.

The rectangles need to be 7" X 9" of any pattern and washable yarn. Bring completed rectangles to the shop and we collect them and have them seamed together.

This is Phyllis getting the next batch of squares ready to be made into a quilt!

Happy Monday...the book of the week, 10/24. is Folk Mittens by Marcia Lewandowski. This is a book of historical mitten patterns. Knitting folk mittens is not difficult. With knowledge of the basics, all you need are needles and some yarn. Knitting ethnic mittens "connects is with other people and cultures of the world". It is a good book for this time of the year(almost mitten wearing weather). Come in a see for yourself...

Good Monday Morning...
First, we had a wonderful retreat last Sat. & Sun. There were about 35 people here for lunch and who knows how many people "just stopped in". We thought it was great fun and hope everyone thought the same! Thank you so much for a great 1st annual Fall Retreat. Now on to business..
Our book of the week this week, 10/3, is titled "The Sock Calendar". For those of you who like to knit socks this is great plus there is a calendar to go with it AND it's 25% off.
NOW...mark your calendar for this coming Sunday, 10/9, when the world famous Lily Chin visits our store to kick off her wonderful Lily Chin Signature Line of yarn. She is not only a very talented designer, worlds' fastest crocheter, but an absolute "ball of fire". Her feet must be moving when she hits the floor in the AM! Her flight arrives about 10:30AM so I would imagine we will be at the store by noon. Bring your Lily Chin books to be autographed, or we will have one, and any questions you might have and enjoy an afternoon with Lily Chin. It will be a wonderful experience!!!
